The Department is respected internationally for the important contributions it makes in the field of electronic and electrical engineering. It has the second highest research income in the UK in this subject area. We are a vibrant community of 40 academic staff (including 19 Professors), 48 research staff, 25 technical staff,16 administrative staff and over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. More information about the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering can be found online at: .     This post is funded by the EPSRC Future Photonics Hub, a major new collaborative programme between the Universities of Sheffield and Southampton. The post holder will be based in the Semiconductor Materials and Devices group (SMD) in Sheffield and will carry out research into novel photonic devices and their manufacture in integrated photonic platforms. The focus will be on investigating a range of new materials and device concepts that will lead to the integration of technologies such as III-V sources, detectors, optical fibre, silicon photonics, 2D and metamaterials.  In addition, she/he will develop new lasers, LEDs, detectors and novel materials.    The post holder will work closely with project partners in Southampton, epitaxy experts in the National Centre for III-V Technologies and industrial sponsors working with the Hub. The vision of the Hub is to play a leading role in driving innovation in photonics manufacturing by addressing major challenges in device and materials integration.    Candidates are sought who have a strong scientific background in semiconductors and semiconductor device design and fabrication, with a PhD in semiconductor based photonic device development or equivalent experience in industry. Experience of testing and analysing semiconductor device performance is also essential.   This post is fixed term until 31 December 2018.   Closing date: 16 February 2016.
